Ben Spencer, Chivas USA phenom with giant future

[FOUR THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT ...] If one of the players at the U.S. under-18 national team camp that opens Sunday at the Home Depot Center needs to find his wayaround Los Angeles, all he needs to do is ask Albuquerque, N.M., resident Ben Spencer. The 6-foot-5 striker knows L.A.'s freeways. Spencer, who turns 17 today, moved to Los Angeles to join the Chivas USA academy program last summer and drives on his own to get to training with Chivas USA's first team in Carson, as well as work out with its academy team inPomona. For four things to know about Spencer ...

L.A. RESIDENT. Spencer lives with Chivas USA assistant coach GreggVanney and his wife after moving from RSL AZ, which he had joined the year before from New Mexico Rush. He convinced his parents to let him live in Los Angeles after Vanney left the Real SaltLake academy program in Arizona in work under Robin Fraser, the Chivas USA head coach. Spencer, cheap soccer jerseys, who holds a 4.2 GPA, lived in a dorm and attended public highschool in Casa Grande. Now,cheap soccer jerseys, he trains in the morning with Chivas USA and takes high school classes online in the afternoon. All this means that Spencer must drive to get around. “I don’tknow who is in more danger,” Ben Sr. the Albuquerque Journal, world cup jerseys, “the residentsof California or Ben.”

MULTIPLE OPTIONS. Spencer, still only a high school junior, scored 22 goals for RSL AZ's U-15/16 squad, helping it reachFinals Week in Milwaukee in 2011 before joining the Chivas USA academy. He scored two goals for Chivas USA's reserves last season and has scored eight goals in 13 games for its U-15/16 academy team in2011-12. His scoring ability has attracted the attention of all the major college programs -- he has made a verbal commitment to UC Santa Barbara -- but he might turn pro and sign a homegrown contractwith Chivas USA.

TEAM LEADER. Spencer will be joined at the U-18 camp by Chivas USA academy teammate MarkyDelgado, cheap soccer jerseys, a three-year Development Academy veteran. Chivas USA academy coach Mike Munoz says the experience Spencer and Delgado bring back to their academy teammates fromnational team camps is invaluable. "They don’t get big egos when they come back," Munoz cdchivasusa.com. "They want to improve themselves, but they also want to improve their teammates as well, soccer jerseys cheap, so it’s huge.”

EARLY BLOOMER.Spencer not only won a New Mexico state title as an eighth-grader at Bosque School under legendary New Mexico soccer coach Klaus Weber, but he alsoscored in the final. Bosque won the 2009 Class 1A-3A title as well, soccer jerseys cheap, meaning Spencer finished his prep career as a sophomore with two state titles.

Bombs Away, Lads! 03 24 2011

By Paul Gardner

American owners of English soccer clubs, it seems to me, walk a rather delicate line between being welcomed for their money, and condemned for -- well, world cup 2014 jerseys, for being American.

To most English devotees Americans are still soccer outsiders, a whole population with weird, mockable accents who call football soccer and who invent funny terms like assist and shutout, which the Brits, simply because those terms are American, won’t use.

That’s all good, clean fun -- and besides, it makes it quite acceptable for totally inexperienced Brits to come over here to teach us how to play the game. Their game, as they would have it.

We’ve just had a lovely example of that attitude from Sporting Kansas City, which have engaged a 21-year-old English TV announcer, Callum Williams. “Covering Major League Soccer is something I’ve always wanted to do,” Williams tells us. Always? Can that be right? Never mind, soccer jerseys cheap, let’s not quibble, as Williams sails merrily on, telling us that he wants “inject some British passion into MLS -- although some of it is already here.”

Oh please, the passion thing again. It was rather unfortunate for Williams that his plea for British passion coincided with Manchester United’s Jonny Evans giving us a splendid example of passionate play. His passionate tackle has put the USA’s Stuart Holden out of the game for six months with a horrendous 26-stitch gash in his knee.

No malice, says Evans -- and I’m sure he’s right. No malice. Just passion. Getting stuck in, as they say. Whatever, 26 stitches is a hell of a lot of stitches.

Williams has also let us know that we’re just not good enough when it comes to TV. As if ESPN’s Jed Drake hadn’t already made it brutally clear that the only way to get on the air is to have a Brit accent (ESPN’s recent canning of JP DellaCamera, with his American accent, is simply appalling, unconscionable), here we have Williams telling us that he is going to “improve the viewing experience of MLS soccer.” Maybe he is, but that sort of boasting, custom soccer jerseys, from a 21-year-old, comes over as something rather more obnoxious than passion.

To even matters out, we have an American who was also caught out by Evans’s passionate display. I had never heard of General Charles Krulak before a few days ago. Now, I rather wish I had remained ignorant of his existence. Krulak is a former American marine, a Vietnam veteran. He is now a director at Aston Villa, which is owned by the American Randy Lerner.

Krulak has offered his advice to the Aston Villa team -- which, at the moment, is not doing at all well, being in danger of relegation from the Premier League. True to the basic simplicities of warfare and trials of strength, Krulak’s advice is this: “What we need now is to quit pointing fingers and everyone look at the Claret and Blue of our kit and the badge they are wearing and go out and kick the crap out of the next teams we play until the end of the season!”

I suppose there might be some excuse for Krulak in that the phrase “kick the crap out of” is pretty standard American usage and that he therefore didn’t mean to encourage the Villa players to go out and really kick opponents.

But his words are still offensive. I, for one, do not regard it as acceptable to compare a soccer game to the horrors of a bloody battleground. Krulak apparently sees no difference between what is supposed to be a game played in a spirit of sportsmanship and a grim battle where a man’s duty is to kill as many of his enemies as possible: “When my Marines put on their uniforms and the emblem of the Corps and went into battle and things got tough, they did not fight for their Commander, they fought for their brothers-in-arms, the men wearing their uniform and emblem.”

Krulak goes on,cheap soccer jerseys, and of course, here comes the passion bit: “We have very good lads who know how to play with passion.” That bit about “lads” doesn’t sound too marine-ish, but the appeal to passion is far too familiar. It is also likely to be inflammatory and dangerous.

A week before Evans’ passionate tackle there was a pretty good example of just how volatile a game soccer can be when passion takes over. The occasion was a game between two old rivals, Liverpool and Manchester United. One of the most passionate rivalries in English soccer, I think it’s fair to say.

In keeping with that status, custom soccer jerseys, this was a game that featured four red cards, trouble in the crowd, police action against drunken fans, and the singing of offensive songs by ManU supporters about the Hillsborough disaster in which 96 Liverpool fans lost their lives.

And this was a youth game. Former Liverpool player John Aldridge was there, and commented: “I have never seen anything like that before at a youth game and I never want to see anything like it again. It was disgusting.” Yet, even in that healthy condemnation is a sort of admission that this wouldn’t have been so bad if it had occurred at a senior team game.

That is where we are with passionate behavior. It far too easily boils over into something dangerous. Passion is not the simple, admirable quality that it used to be. There is too much money at stake in the modern game of soccer for something as apparently wholesome as passion to remain an innocent quality.

Of course it has been tainted. It has been taken up by commercial interests, it has become a regular part of soccer salesmanship -- no matter what these guys are trying to sell you, whether it’s soccer shoes or game tickets, they’re going to work passion in there somehow.

The advertisers are relying on the word still maintaining its honorable meaning while they do everything they can to cheapen that honor.

All of that is deplorable. It is not made any better by General Krulak’s mindless reference to his Vietnam days and his exhortation to kick the crap out of everybody. One is reminded, yet again, of former Liverpool coach Bill Shankly’s famous -- and equally mindless -- remark about soccer being a more important matter than mere life and death.

A more reasoned reference point might be Bertrand Russell’s observation that “opinions that are held with passion are always those for which no good ground exists.&rdquo,custom soccer jerseys;

Humane Society investigating Gas Company meter rea

REDLANDS >> When a meter reader arrived at Cathy Rodriguez’s home Thursday morning, she asked the man to wait outside the gate until she brought her three Yorkshire terriers inside her home.

But according to Rodriguez, soccer jerseys cheap, the Southern California Gas Company employee didn’t wait, and that’s when things went wrong.

“The next thing she knew, custom soccer jerseys, the meter reader was inside the property and the dogs circled around behind him, world cup 2014 jerseys,” said Frank Padilla, humane officer with the Humane Society of San Bernardino Valley. “He swung around with the stick and struck (one of the dogs) in the head. Tom Hoffarth on the media Mom knows best — find

Try explaining to your mother about the lack of progress over the launch of the Dodgers’ new channel. The conversation starts with Aristotelian logic, but ends up channeling Abbott and Costello:

“I found the Dodgers on Channel 219!” mom said in a text. “What a great surprise! Does this mean we’re getting games on now?”

“Well, no, it’s just a one-time thing for today,” I replied, while at home watching the same Dodgers-Diamondbacks game on Fox Sports 1. “It’s just a Fox cable channel that has decided to show it across the nation. Enjoy it now. There won’t be another national game for at least a few weeks.”

“Why isn’t Vin Scully announcing this game?”

“This network gets to pick the broadcasters they want.”

“Why wouldn’t they pick Vin Scully? I think they’re using the other team’s announcers instead.”

“You have a point. Maybe because they work for Fox Sports, and this game is on Fox Sports.”

“The Dodgers aren’t on Fox Sports any more?”

“No, the Dodgers own their own channel now.”

“Time Warner Cable doesn’t own it?”

“Nope.”

“Then why do they say we need Time Warner Cable to see it? Can’t the Dodgers put their channel on whatever place they want?”

“Because so far, Time Warner Cable has agreed to the terms of a deal to carry the games.”

“Who decided what the terms of the deal would be?”

“Time Warner Cable.”

“You told us to put this DirecTV thing on our roof so we’d get all the sports channels. We don’t get Time Warner Cable.”

“I know. That’s still a good thing.”

“It doesn’t seem good now.”

(A long pause)

“Why couldn’t DirecTV buy the channel first and make their own deal?”

“Time Warner Cable was the one who did it first.”

“Why?”

“I don’,world cup jerseys;t know.”

“Who should I call? Time Warner Cable?”

“But you don’t have Time Warner Cable. You have DirecTV.”

“I’m not asking what service I have. Who do I need to call at the Dodgers?”

“I don’t know. Did you see that guy get thrown out at third base?”

(A longer pause between texts)

“This whole thing just really stinks. I’m writing a letter to the newspaper.”

“Did you see the newspaper ad where SportsNet L.A. is using the picture of Vin Scully and telling us ‘Don’t Miss This’? Even Vin must think that’s fertilizer.”

“What is SportsNet L.A.?”

“The name of the Dodgers’ channel.”

“It’s not called the Dodger Channel? That would make more sense.”

“There are a lot of things now that don’,world cup jerseys;t make sense.”

“Why wouldn’t the Dodgers be on this TWC SportsNet? I have that channel, don’t I?”

“Yes, but that’s the Lakers’ channel. It’s different from the Dodgers’ channel.”

“Time Warner has both channels?”

“Time Warner owns the Lakers channel. The Dodgers own their channel and Time Warner is in charge of distributing it.”

“Then why can’t Time Warner put the Dodgers on the Lakers channel now that the Lakers aren’t using it?”

(Another pause)

“What does this mean: #INeedMyDodgers?”

“,world cup jerseys; They want you to send out a message on Twitter and put that in there and magically things will not happen.”

“I don’t have Twitter.”

“Good thing.”

“I don’t do Facebook.”

“Also good. Apparently, they think people will get mad enough to start yelling about all this on social media. With the hashtags and words all smashed together.”

“That’s a hashtag? It looks like the pound key.”

“Maybe it’s just easier to get a Sharpie and draw up a bunch of protest signs for all your friends and then hand them out at a staged media event. That seems to be an acceptable means of creating news.”

(Another pause).

“Should I go to this website and write in my complaint like they say I’m supposed to do? If enough people do it, that’ll change things.”

“If it makes you feel better, sure.”

“That’s not a good attitude. If everyone was that way, then nothing would get accomplished.”

“Maybe you should write to your city council people, or the state senators, or the House of Representatives. Or Oprah.”

“Or the president of the Dodgers?”

(Another pause)

“IMO, why I can’t get the Dodgers channel if I am willing to pay for it.”

“Do you even know what IMO means?”

“It has something to do with ‘I’m your mother’?”

“Well, you still used it correctly. This whole Dodger thing is kind of complicated.”

“IMO, explain.”

“There should be a system in place where people can pick and choose the channels they want instead of having to buy a group of channels they never watch. DirecTV says it isn’t fair if you’re not a sports fan to have to pay the extra money each month to make sure all their customers get a Dodger channel.”

“But I am a Dodger fan.”

“Suppose you didn’t like baseball. Would you be willing to have your monthly bill go up just because they’re trying to make everyone pay for that Dodgers’ channel?”

“I would pay extra for the Dodgers channel.”

“Maybe some would, but not everyone should. What if they added a really expensive all-soccer channel and made you pay for it even if you didn’t watch it?”

“I would watch soccer.”

“OK, what about an all-waffle channel, where all they did was show you different ways to make waffles 24 hours a day. And they charged you a lot of money each month for it.”

“I would actually watch that.”

“I don’t doubt that.”

(Another long pause)

“My computer isn’t working. I tried shutting it off and turning it back on. I unplugged that yellow wire and plugged it back in. I have no e-mail. That’s why I’m texting you. The AT&T repair man is here now. He says AT&T has channels now we can get cheaper. Should we get rid of DirecTV and get that instead?”

“AT&T doesn’t have the Dodgers channel either, if that matters. Only Time Warner does.”

“Do you think he could hook up Time Warner for me if he had the right cables?”

“Probably not. Try subscribing to IMO and see how that works, world cup jerseys.”

“My friend said she can get the Dodgers games on her computer. How do you do that?”

“Well, it’s not legal, but some people are doing it through gaming the system. Don’t get that desperate. It’s unbecoming.”

“The repair man is wearing a Dodgers cap, custom soccer jerseys. He just asked for the score of the Dodgers game. What is it?”

“I thought you were watching the game on TV.”

“I was, but you’ve distracted me now. I have to turn Vin Scully on the radio to find out what’s going on. Listening to Vinny on the radio reminds me of when you were kids. We did that all the time.”

“Maybe you’ve figured this whole thing out.”

(Another pause)

“Are we still going to the game on Mother’s Day?”

“Of course.”

“,cheap soccer jerseys;Don’t let me forget my radio.”

RECORD, PAUSE, DELETE

Gauging the media’s high- and low-level marks of the week, and what’s ahead:

PLAYING THROUGH

We find ourselves already buying Greg Norman-branded polo shirts and golf shorts at Costco these days. Why not extend the brand and have him become the signature voice of Fox’s new deal in carrying USGA events — the U.S. Open, the U.S. Women’s Open and the U.S. Senior Open — starting in 2015? With the network’s official announcement this week that he will be the main analyst working with Joe Buck, Norman sounded more like a TV programmer when he explained a bit why the Fox deal makes sense at a time when the Masters just saw sagging ratings for a major that didn’t include Tiger Woods and had Phil Mickelson miss the cut: “When you’re thinking about how to draw comparisons to the Masters, the PGA, they’re all in different parts of the year. The U.S. Open is in the second quarter when the viewing audience far exceeds what there was earlier with the NBA and NHL and Indy 500, so you’re hitting the mark at the right time. ... And look at the dynamics of what Fox has done in delivering out-of-the-box coverage. Over X number of decades it’s second to none and they know how to reach down and up to an audience. Look at golf today — it’s in a bit of a slump in the U.S. to tell you the truth. The younger generation is leaving for whatever reasons. The USGA realizes that and obviously we’ll have some dynamic discussions going forward. It’s a work in progress.” Maybe start with the fact the USGA is going media-friendly with the younger demo by just releasing a “Rules of Golf” smart phone app that helps players on the course with better explanations about what etiquette is expected.

Palestinian soccer star kicks off a recent release

To most of the outside world, the ongoing, constantly heated rivalry between Israel and Palestine is something that is increasingly difficult to understand. For individuals living within the confines of this small, dry strip of Middle Eastern land, however, it’s just how life goes. You learn to celebrate your victories and revel in hope rather than dwelling on the negatives. And this is exactly how after being released from an Israeli prison after three years.

A talented, prized member of the , al-Sarsak was accused in 2009 of being an active member in an Islamic Jihadist group. When Mahmoud, custom soccer jerseys, a promising young soccer talent, left Gaza to play the sport he loved in the West Bank, many warned him of the dangers, but no one close to the young athlete could have foresaw what would happen immediately upon his departure.

Mahmoud was detained after attempting to cross the border. Israeli officials leveled charges against al-Sarsak, claiming he was a member of Islamic Jihad, but Mahmoud steadfastly denied the charges and they subsequently never stuck. Nevertheless, al-Sarsak was thrown in jail, world cup 2014 jerseys, along with many other prisoners only facing accusations and not real charges, and life in that region continued to play out as it has been for many, many years.

For three years, dealing with conditions most people could never even begin to imagine, al-Sarsak spent his days and nights detained in prison, thought to be a terrorist rather than a simple soccer player. But things started to change as prisoners within the Israeli detainment camp began to exercise hunger strikes. Mahmoud participated in an alternating pattern of strikes for four months, world cup jerseys, protesting his imprisonment, and with so many prisoners also participating in the strikes, Israel had no choice but to release al-Sarsak and other prisoners.

Beyond the field of soccer, al-Sarsak’s actions inside of the prison have helped to bring about change. Israel has now struck a deal whereby the solitary confinement program will end, family visitation will be allowed, and other improvements will be made as long as prisoners stop striking.

For his courage while imprisoned, the changes he helped to usher through, and for his contribution to Palestinian soccer that was never forgotten, al-Sarsak received a triumphant homecoming.

Only 25, Mahmoud should have a long and impressive career ahead of him. His jersey sales will undoubtedly shoot through the roof going forward, and anyone who wants to buy his memorabilia .

More than any fame or fortune, however, al-Sarsak is just happy to be home with his loved ones and free of the chains which bound him for so long.

Reading FC starlet Aaron Kuhl plays down Man City

Reading F.C. midfielder Aaron Kuhl has dismissed speculation linking him with a ?2 million move to Manchester City in the upcoming summer window.

Kuhl, 18, has turned in a series of standout performances,?including in the first leg of the Under-21 Premier League Cup against City at the Etihad on 10 April, for the Royals’ U-21 side this season.

In fact, the highly-rated midfielder is reportedly attracting interest from a number of clubs, with City believed to be leading the race for the 18-year-old maestro.

However, cheap soccer jerseys, Kuhl has insisted the aforementioned ‘reports’ are merely rumours, while underlining his desire to stay on at Reading.

“It’s all just rumours,” Kuhl told the .

“It’s good to have rumours like that, getting your name in the paper and getting people to notice you, but I want to stay here.

“I’ve come through this club, I’m an academy product. I’ve been here for six or seven years now. This place means everything.

“It’s my home basically. I come in every day, live, breathe, eat – I do everything here.

“It’s a great club to be around. Everyone is humble and nice to talk to, so it’s all good.”

Kuhl added: “You get a burst of excitement [when you see the reports] but then you realise you’ve just got to stay down to earth and don’t let anything like that get in your head.

“The boys have all been getting into me a bit, talking about the ?2 million price tag, but it’s all a bit of banter.

“Nothing is going to change. I’m happy where I am and if I keep going the way I am then hopefully the manager [Nigel Adkins] will take notice. He’s put young players in the first team before as you’ve seen.”,soccer jerseys cheap;

Reading (18-13-13) — priced at to win promotion to England’s top-flight — are currently occupying the final promotion play-offs place but Brighton & Hove Albion, Nottingham Forest, Ipswich Town and Blackburn Rovers are within just three points of the Royals.

That said, if Nigel Adkins’ side were to win promotion, Kuhl — whose current contract at the Madjeski Stadium expires on 30 June 2016 — would likely stay at the club.

The same goes for Derby County midfielder Will Hughes, soccer jerseys cheap, who has been linked with a host of top English clubs, including Liverpool, over the past few months.

Now then, can the Royals beat out the likes of Derby (24-9-11), Queens Park Rangers (22-10-12) and Wigan Athletic (20-10-13) in the promotion play-offs to return to the Premier League next term?

Socceroos to face Lebanon

Australia will face Lebanon in an international friendly as part of their preparations for September’s AFC qualifier against Jordan.

The Socceroos, who drew their opening two games in the fourth round of qualifying, are set to meet Jordan on September 11 in Amman.

Australia meet Lebanon five days prior and coach Holger Osieck said travel factors and the fact Theo Buecker’s men play in a similar way to Jordan were reasons behind opting to face a team ranked 144 in the world, custom soccer jerseys.

“This match against Lebanon will be an ideal opportunity for us to face quality opposition who play a similar style of football to our next opponents in the FIFA World Cup Asian qualifiers, Jordan, custom soccer jerseys,” Osieck said.

“The other positive is that Beirut is in a similar region and time zone to Amman and the travel to Jordan following the match is short.

“We will definitely be using this match against Lebanon to test the level of our players before we meet Jordan, cheap soccer jerseys.”

Australia sit third in Group B behind Japan and Iraq after drawing their clashes against Oman and Japan in June.

Bulls workaholic coach ready to trade film work fo

DEERFIELD, Ill. -- The NBA and college landscapes are strewn with coaches who are workaholics and basketball junkies. But in Tom Thibodeau's case, it goes way beyond that, even in normal circumstances.

Thibodeau is single and, at 53,cheap nhl jerseys always has been. He's devoted to his parents and his extended family but they're mostly in New England, far from the office he keeps at the Chicago Bulls' practice facility and the home where he changes clothes a few miles away.

Until 18 months ago, Thibodeau was a lifetime assistant coach, which means a relative grunt, which means a plugger, which means a no-lifer in the basketball hierarchy. Coaches run practice, practice ends, players go home ... coaches get to work.

Don't get the wrong idea -- Thibodeau has loved every obsessed, devoted hour. But that "10,000-Hour Rule" of high achievement that Malcolm Gladwell famously wrote about? Thibs has those logged by lunch time Wednesday. Week after week.

That's why the, er, extended offseason of 2011 was such a challenge for him. One year earlier, Thibodeau was in daily communication, sometimes multiply so via text and cell calls, with young Bulls star Derrick Rose. He lurked at the Berto Center constantly enough to catch center Joakim Noah every time -- every time! -- Noah dropped by, prodding the Chicago big man onto the court to work on this or that.

Thibodeau immersed himself in the opportunity of his lifetime -- NBA head coach, finally -- and got nearly every reward possible for the time, the sweat, the dedication he logged. Sixty-two victories in his first year, making him only the third head coach to reach 60 (joining Paul Westphal, 62 in 1993, and Bill Russell, 60 in 1967).Detroit Red Wings winter classic jerseys 2014 Best record in the NBA last season. An MVP award for Rose, the youngest player ever to win it. A trip to the Eastern Conference finals before falling to Miami. And for Thibodeau, NBA Coach of the Year honors.

Then pfffft! nothing. After The Finals, the league conducted its June draft and then plunged into darkness. Thibodeau plunged into, ugh, free time. No contact with the players, at the risk of six-figure fines from NBA headquarters. No X's. No O's either.

It was one of those existential tree-falling-in-the-forest things. If a coach isn't coaching, well, what is he then?

"I heard he's been going crazy," Rose said when he showed up at the Berto Center Thursday afternoon. "I heard he's been showing up at, like, DePaul games and things like that. Hopefully he's been coaching somebody. But I know he's going to be on us hard this year."

The Bulls' young star arrived in time to stop upstairs from the practice gym and say hello to Thibodeau and staff. Heeding pre-CBA ratification rules, though, the coach and general manager Gar Forman were seen pulling out of the parking lot a few minutes later.

If Thibodeau couldn't talk to Rose for five months, Rose couldn't talk to his head coach either. It's a close relationship that benefited both of them last season, along with the other Bulls and Chicago fans, starting from the day Thibodeau got the job in June 2010.

"I missed everything, man," Rose said. "Berto. The people that work here. Thibs, just talking to him every day. Just picking his mind, him picking my mind. Just pushing me as a player, me pushing him as a coach."

Thibodeau, who spoke with reporters two hours earlier, said: "The thing is, what you do realize is how much you miss the players. Not having them around every day, that was tough. And we've got good guys. The challenge was for us to maximize our time, so it gave us more time to watch film, to work on the playbook, to study, to come up with new ideas, to go visit with coaches, things of that nature."

By all accounts, Thibodeau spent more time watching film than Robert Osborne and Roger Ebert combined. He couldn't help but take a few work breaks, and he made several round trips to New England. "I got a chance to get around Chicago a little bit," he said. "I also had the opportunity to go home for Thanksgiving, which is the first time in about 20 years to have a holiday with my family, so that was great."

Thibodeau also had knee surgery, attending to an old injury that had him gimping pretty good on the sideline last spring. Asked how his rehab has gone. he said: "I'm ready, I'm ready."

For wind sprints? "I'm not that ready."

In watching all that video,Toronto Maple Leafs winter classic jerseys 2014 Thibodeau saw the things the Bulls did right last season and, no doubt, several things that went wrong. The team's offense too often was Rose-driven and one-dimensional. By the playoffs the Pacers and the Hawks were loading up on him and Miami's LeBron James stymied him at the end in the Eastern Conference finals.

The onus now is on Thibodeau and staff to add options and relieve some of the burden, particularly in a compressed schedule. The Bulls might seek free agent help from the outside via their mid-level exception. Maybe they'll deal. Or maybe Thibodeau will push again for the players he valued last season -- Keith Bogans was almost a oxymoron as the team's shooting guard in 2010-11 -- and try to find the answers in the lab.

"Well, there's never enough [video to watch]," he said, chuckling.

Thibodeau knows labs. And TV remotes. But he likes his whistle, too. And soon, real soon, they'll be together again.

Bulls barrel on while starting bigs search for the

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Bulls, since Tom Thibodeau took over as head coach at the start of the 2010-11 season, are 74-23, which has Thibodeau on pace to challenge Avery Johnson's mark as the NBA coach who100 victories. Johnson got there in his second season in Dallas, cheap nhl jerseys with a 100-31 (.7633) mark, leaving Thibodeau (.7628) 33 games to win 26.

The Bulls' defense has been stifling under Thibodeau. He has the league's reigning Most Valuable Player (Derrick Rose) and an indispensable secondary player (Luol Deng) performing at an All-Star level. Chicago has one of the NBA's deepest benches. And the shooting-guard position that so vexed the Bulls a year ago has been upgraded via an improved Ronnie Brewer and, whenever he gets back from a lingering groin injury, veteran Richard Hamilton.

So nitpicking over the inefficiencies of center Joakim Noah and power forward Carlos Boozer seems a little piggish, given Chicago's No. 1 record in the East (12-3) and No. 2 scoring differential (8.53). Life is good for the Bulls, all things considered. Dwelling on Noah-Boozer -- and Thibodeau's usage of them, particularly late in games -- seems something half-empty.

Better to notice the work of their replacements, Omer Asik and Taj Gibson, and characterize that as half-full. Rare is the NBA coach who can shuffle through four quality big men the way Thibodeau can, a luxury for a guy who puts so much emphasis on protecting the paint and helping defensively.

"Omer would start for a lot of teams in the NBA," Toronto coach Dwane Casey said before the Bulls' victory over the Raptors on Saturday at United Center. "He's an effective big man. Length, size, strength, he knows how to play. He's experienced from playing over in Europe. And Taj would start on a lot of teams also. So [Thibodeau has] two pretty good players in those two guys who can step in and play. Both those guys are very effective."

Foul trouble and inconsistent play often turned Noah and Boozer into spectators in the fourth quarter through Chicago's first dozen games, with Asik and Gibson providing the defensive security blanket that Thibodeua grabs for down the stretch. To the coach, the 10-2 result was all the explanation needed for his rotation.

But a lot of fans and media saw the sight of the Bulls' third and fourth most-important players on the bench late in games as troubling now and crippling later.Detroit Red Wings winter classic jerseys 2014 If that ends up being yet another thing to worry about -- like Derrick Rose's undue offensive burden -- the team would have to win in spite of that, rather than because of it.

Where the coaching staff might see only W's and L's, many others see $'s. As in, the $131 million still owed to Boozer (last four years of his five-year deal) and Noah (new five-year extension). Even if Bulls vice president John Paxson and general manager Gar Forman don't have to re-sign Asik and Gibson anytime soon, it maybe ought to rankle the front office that two backups making about $3 million have been doing the work of guys being paid almost $26 million this season.

Order in the Bulls' pecking order appeared to be restored at Boston Friday, when Boozer and Noah both logged 10:31 in the fourth quarter and wound up with fat positives (plus-19 for Boozer, plus-13 for Noah) in an 88-79 victory. Asked about his use of the starting bigs down the stretch,Thibodeau laughed. "I was waiting for that one," he said. "Not enough, too much -- what's next?"

Thibodeau has cited matchups as the driver of his decisions, which explained the 4:05, combined, that centers Noah and Asik played against the Raptors over the weekend. But Noah and Boozer were back to watching in the fourth at a blowout loss in Memphis on Monday.

That makes four of the last seven games in which neither Noah or Boozer played a lick in the fourth quarter, and another game in which Noah (44 seconds) and Boozer (1:45) made only cameos. That is the hidden concern in glossing over this trend with the Bulls' bigs.

Noah and Boozer often don't look comfortable together on the court because, frankly, they haven't played together all that much.

A year ago, Chicago was 24-5 when the two players started together. But that meant Chicago played 53 games in which one or the other (or both) were not in the starting lineup. First Boozer missed all of November after breaking his wrist in training camp. Then Noah lost the middle third of his season to hand surgery. By the end, the two had started together for two nine-game stretches, a five-gamer and then the season's final half-dozen games. That was it.

In the games they started together, Noah averaged 9.4 points with 9.2 rebounds, and Boozer had 15.0 and 8.7. But in the games they didn't, Noah's numbers were 15.2 and 12.2. Boozer's were 20.0 and 10.5.

It seems logical to say that, if one key frontcourt player isn't available, the other's production goes up. But by that great a difference? The stats seemed to fuel theories that Noah and Boozer don't mesh well. Boozer is a pick-and-pop guy, while Noah is better in the pick-and-roll. Some though that they get in each other's way at times.

There is something to the notion that big guys have to develop a rhythm, a sense of the other. The best of them manage to adapt quickly. For all the praise he gets as the Big Fundamental, San Antonio's Tim Duncan actually has tweaked his game to suit the big man playing alongside him, from David Robinson to Tiago Splitter to everyone in between.

"[Tim has] really been unique," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "He establishes some sort of environment in which these guys feel comfortable with him. In a low-key sort of way, he adjusts to what they can do. He looks at what a DeJuan Blair can do or a Malik Rose and he adjusts, and that makes it easier for them to just do what they're capable of doing."

Said Duncan: "For the big next to you, you have to develop a confidence in what they do, an understanding of what they do. So that it's a lot less thought and just a lot more play -- you know where guys are going to be, you can trust them and not hesitate when you want to pull the trigger on something."

Is it as simple as getting and staying out of the other man's way?

"Spacing is huge, probably the most important part," Popovich said. "Knowing when to be out of the block, when to be out on a wing or the dead area on the baseline, up on the elbows. We've had guys like Malik Rose or Blair or Splitter who could really clog up the middle, so Timmy's got to be the guy who adjusts and goes out."

Now consider Noah and Boozer, thrown together last season and then separated for chunks of time -- even in practice -- by injuries. When Boozer was out, Thibodeau used Gibson in his place. But when Noah went down, it was veteran Kurt Thomas who stepped in. That kept Gibson and Asik together with the second unit, which means they actually got more familiar with each other than Noah and Boozer ever did.

This season, no one has had much time together on the court outside of games. The desire to win each night is the reason Noah and Boozer have been sitting late in games. But winning in May and maybe beyond is why they shouldn't be sitting too long.Toronto Maple Leafs winter classic jerseys 2014

Deng sticks with Great Britain while Chicago fiddl

Luol Deng could have gone cynical. He could have assessed the long odds against the Great Britain men's basketball team in the London Olympics, cheap nhl jerseys donned an all-or-nothing attitude, then shrugged off the commitment to his national team in favor of his NBA team.

But then, Luol Deng only plays for the Chicago Bulls. He isn't the Chicago Bulls.

For a while, it seemed as if Deng had his priorities out of whack, that he wasn't thinking of his day job first, the one that gave him $70 million contract. The Bulls' veteran small forward has torn ligaments in his left wrist, an injury he played with during the second half of 2011-12 and is playing with in the Olympics.

Yes, that meant Deng delayed surgery on his wrist and stuck around (mostly effectively) for what Chicago hoped would be a long, fruitful postseason -- until that storyline snapped along with the anterior-cruciate ligament in Derrick Rose's left knee in the playoff opener. Still, Deng's preference to wait on surgery was driven by the upcoming London Games, too, and his desire to be more than a basketball goodwill ambassador in a suit with a cast on his hand.

It never seemed selfish. Deng's pledge to Great Britain was all about gratitude for the asylum England provided when he, his parents and his siblings were fleeing war in Sudan and poverty in Egypt. His decision did, however, seem to lack the urgency and single-mindedness that the 6-foot-8 Deng needed to be showing to the Bulls and their NBA championship window.

The upside of Chicago's premature elimination from the 2012 playoffs might have been a swift surgical repair for Deng and a whole summer to recover. Waiting until after the Olympics seemed particularly indulgent and individual.

Then Deng showed up Sunday, scored 26 points in Britain's opening game -- a 95-75 blowout loss to Russia -- and sounded anything but indulgent or individual.

Yes, the memory of being part of the nation's first Olympic appearance since 1964 is his. But the experience was meant to be shared, something for the greater good of English hoops, heretofore scufflin'.

"It was a special moment," he told reporters afterward. "For us growing up, basketball didn't get much attention. We're playing against the world where basketball is everything in their country. We have dreams. We want to develop the game. Hopefully, we have youngsters watching and following in our footsteps."

Deng added: "If I was home watching these guys go through it, I don't know if it'd be easy for me to live with that. Now that I walked out with them, I can always talk about it and look back."

That's kind of how Chicago NBA fans will have to approach the next 12 to 24 months -- talking about and looking back on the Bulls' two fine years with the league's best regular-season record. That's a memory that can't be wiped away, unlike, say, the team's competitive chances in 2012-13 and maybe 2013-14.

Unlike Deng -- who now might not have surgery after all, making him available from the start -- the Bulls appear to have assessed their prospects, embraced an all-or-nothing agenda and, like Punxsutawney Phil seeing his shadow, gone underground. With Rose expected to be out at least through All-Star Weekend, possibly into March, they have set aside any ambitions about chasing a title next June and spent this offseason tweaking and tailoring the roster for ... what? Future tweaking and tailoring.Detroit Red Wings winter classic jerseys 2014

It's almost as if general manager Gar Forman and vice president John Paxson wanted to remove any temptation Rose, their passionate, ring-hungry point guard, might have had to rush back too soon. Survive the regular season, get a rested Rose back with six weeks or two months to spare and make playoff noise? Can't have that. So instead of keeping intact a roster that, in their hearts, they believed was good enough to win a title in 2012, the Bulls have opened, then plugged holes with a bunch of character actors from NBA Central Casting.

Out: Omer Asik, C.J. Watson, Kyle Korver, Ronnie Brewer, John Lucas III and Brian Scalabrine.

In: Nazr Mohammed, Kirk Hinrich, Vladimir Radmanovic, Mario Belinelli, Marcus Teague and Nate Robinson. Seems clear the crew Rose eventually comes back to will be a notch or three below the one he waved goodbye to in late April.

Meanwhile, the soundtrack for the changes is an endless loop of Forman assuring fans, through reporters at a Rose news conference, that all personnel decisions this summer would be made for basketball reasons, not financial ones.

Basketball reasons in a couple of years maybe, but hardly for now.

The Asik situation was vexing, no question, after Houston signed the backup center and restricted free agent to one of what Carmelo Anthony calls those "ridiculous" backloaded contracts. No one, not even the Rockets, will argue that Asik will be worth $14.9 million in Year 3 of the deal but that -- with its luxury-tax multiplier implications -- was what it took to get the Bulls to blink on matching. An argument could be made that Asik could be justified at an average of $8 million for each of three seasons. But team chairman Jerry Reinsdorf, who signs the checks, wasn't making it.

Not picking up options on Korver, Watson and Brewer enabled the Bulls to shave some salary -- and tax -- for 2012-13 too, their alleged replacements hired at reduced rates. But just as Asik's departure removes the competitive advantage of Chicago's bigger, deeper frontcourt, cashiering key bench guys from the past two seasons strips it of its depth and threatens its chemistry.

If Rose has been the first leg of the Bulls' championship-minded stool and a deep roster its second, defense has been the third leg, installed and coached well enough by Tom Thibodeau to accommodate Carlos Boozer. Getting similar results with Radmanovic,Toronto Maple Leafs winter classic jerseys 2014 Bellinelli and Robinson? Looks like Bulls management wants to throw the ultimate test at their head coach before they extend his contract long-term.

The Bulls have been selling fans on the prudence of keeping their powder dry this season and possibly next for a strategic splash in 2014 free agency, when Deng's contract is done and Boozer likely will exit via the amnesty clause. That assumes, though, that A) big-name NBA free agents will take Chicago more seriously than they have in any previous year, including 2010, and B) Rose will remain patient with his hometown team's commitment to budget first, blueprint second.

So bully for Deng, who chose to show his appreciation for people who had his back when they didn't have to, even without a legit shot at a gold medal. His "other" team has gone the opposite route, taking for granted the people who have filled United Center seats, under the pretense that nothing but a championship -- NBA gold -- is worth pursuing.

Game 3 will be telling moment for young Thunder N

SAN ANTONIO -- Tiago Splitter was intentionally fouled away from the ball by Oklahoma City's Kendrick Perkins, then again 14 seconds later by Perkins, then again nine seconds later by Nick Collison, then again 17 seconds later by Kevin Durant.cheap nhl jerseys Four consecutive Spurs possessions, four consecutive hugs for Splitter.

The third quarter of the second game of the series, and the Thunder were already desperate.

In a related development:

Uh-oh.

The Thunder are down 0-2 to the hottest team in these or most any other playoffs, the usual conventional approaches are not working, and now neither are the gimmicks of Hack-a-Splitter. The chances of coming back and beating these clicking Spurs in the best-of-seven Western Conference finals are very, very slim. This is a tough spot.

This is a telling spot.

What happens Thursday night in Game 3 as the series shifts to Oklahoma City will say a lot about the Thunder, and not just their 2011-12 aspirations. To anyone who has followed the ascension the last three or four years, through the building into a championship contender that was easy to spot, the answer is simple. They will make a positive statement, as happened Sunday night with a tough fight. They will respond,as happened Tuesday with a final 10 minutes that wiped out the image of a beaten team ready to cash out in the third quarter.

But Game 3 is big because Oklahoma City has the realistic goal of years of long playoffs runs and now we all get to find out together how they handle real adversity. That's how it can be about the 2012 Western Conference finals and a pinpoint moment on tracking the trajectory, because title contenders do not shrink in these moments and the Thunder will still be title contenders into the future no matter how quick the end comes in this series.

They haven't genuinely been in this kind of trouble before. Yes, there was the 0-2 deficit to the Lakers in the first round in 2010, but the Thunder were playoff newbies,Detroit Red Wings winter classic jerseys 2014 learning as they went, and the opponent was a heavy favorite on its way to a second consecutive title. (That was an encouraging result: Oklahoma City refused to go peacefully and won the next two games before losing in six with congratulations all around for their heart and limitless future.) And in the 2011 elimination in the same Western Conference finals, the Thunder split the first two games, another positive response to the first time on such a stage, before losing the next three by six, seven and four points, again to the eventual champion.

None of that is like 0-2 to the Spurs, winners of all 10 playoff games after winning the final 10 of the regular season. And certainly not as part of heading home with the dreams of an amazing fan base dangling by slim hopes.

"We did a better job (in the fourth quarter)," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said after the fourth-quarter rally fell short and became the 120-111 loss at AT&T Center. "But playing against the Spurs, you take away the paint and you give up something. They made 11 threes. They're a good team. That's what makes them a good team.Toronto Maple Leafs winter classic jerseys 2014 That's why they've won 20 in a row. We just have to figure it out. We've been in this situation once before with this group. That was a couple years ago against the Lakers. We lost our first two and we came back home and won two. We've had some history with it. But we've got to focus on just winning Game 3, and that's our focus going into tomorrow's practice."

Except that they haven't been in this situation. There weren't nearly the same expectations in 2010, not nearly as good a team (pre-Perkins,James Harden and Serge Ibaka as rookies) and never had nearly as good a chance to reach the Finals. This will be different.

This will be telling.

"We get an opportunity to go home and play in front of our home crowd and try to get Game 3," Durant said. "We've got to take it a game at a time, a possession at a time. We'll be all right."
